What are some good music software programs to buy?

I’d like a list of as many programs as possible, for creating and mixing music, editing songs, programs with effects, and programs that have as many functions/features available. I’d like a list of any program/software that you think is decently good, ranging from FREE to 1,000 dollars. I’d especially like the specs and comparisons of programs, plus the specific programs that you can use to make your own bass and such, instead of using sample loops that are unoriginal.

So Im done loading all of my cds onto iTunes, and I dont always have a gift card loaded on my account. So I used to rely on friends free music software like Limewire for free music, but I want my own, yet I cant afford to ruin my computer. So please if anyone can give me a good company and your opinion if it slows down your computer or what, because I may use Limewire, but I hear it may cause viruses, so yeah please help. Thanks!

I know about music so I want something where I can actually write the music, not just a bunch of preset tracks to throw together.
